The prime (and only) suspect in the murder of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, who was stuffed into a suitcase and dumped into an irrigation canal, is 28-year-old Melissa Huckaby, a "soft-spoken, sweet Bible study teacher." Moreover, "her grandfather is a preacher; there are some good influences in that family."

Oh really? I hate to think what she might have done had she come from a family with some bad influences.

Of course, "God" did tell Abraham to slay his own son, Issac, which Abraham was apparently quite willing to do, until "God" said, "hey, just kidding!" Talk about the ultimate suck-up. If God tells you to kill a little kid, you might want to hold off a bit until you get that "just kidding" punch line.

Yes, religion can have a powerful life giving force but only to those who can look at it clearly and say, "this shit is crazy," I'm having no part of it.

Religion is a violently powerful thing. It has been used as the justification for mass murders, attempted genocide, and apparently suicide... It justified the crusades and it justified 9-11. Indeed it's made some people crazy. But something with such potential for evil, I must say out of conviction, may also have an equally powerful potential for beauty. Science and technology are similar in this polarity of potential. Through science and technology we've created medicine that can save life an weapons that can take it (consider the A-bomb). Let that be a sign to us that religion, though it may have produced such evil, may have a powerful life giving force if it is wielded well.

Great blog! I'll be around.
